Jalandhar, September 25, 2013: On the third day of International Design Week 2 that Apeejay College of Fine Arts, is hosting in collaboration with Willem de Kooning Academy for Fine Arts & Design (WdKA), Rotterdam, Netherlands, Prof. Bas Kortman addressed the 330 design students attending the week long workshop and  spoke at length on ‘Creativity’.
He explained that creativity is inherent in all human beings but it comes to the fore when people are faced with problems. Mind comes up with multiple solutions and these solutions are ‘man’s creativity.’ He quoted  Irish writer and Nobel Prize Winner, Samuel Beckett who wrote “Ever tried. Ever failed. No Matter. Try Again. Fail Again. Fail Better”. Prof. Kortmann said that failures propel us to come up with better creative ideas. He also showed pictures of indigenously made kitchen stoves that were energy efficient and economical.
Rajesh Kalsi, Assist Professor in the Department of Design gave a presentation titled “17/17 Chandigarh” in which he threw light on how the land of 17 villages had been used to lay the foundation of the modern city of Chandigarh without proper rehabilitation efforts for the villagers.  Making a passionate plea to preserve the cultural heritage of Punjab, he cited Gandhiji who had said “If villages perish, India will perish”
Dr. Sucharita said that the workshop was very effectively sensitizing the student participants about the efficacy of using locally made products as they were more energy efficient and climate responsive. The workshop was also attended by Kamna Raj Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Apeejay Education Society who said that these kinds of design projects were needed to liven up the art scene in Jalandhar.
