Jalandhar, December 17, 2013: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, the iconic institution known for 128 years of committed service to the cause of Women Empowerment through Higher Education, has brought out a book on this theme of utmost contemporary relevance.
The book titled Women Empowerment and Higher Education was released by Chander Mohan, President, Arya Shiksha Mandal, Om Gauri Dutt Sharma, Director, Doordarshan, Suresh Seth, renowned writer & media personality and Dr. Sushma Chawla, eminent gynecologist and social activist.
Dr. Atima Sharma is the Chief-Editor, Mohini Sharda and Seema Jain are the Editors of the book which is dedicated to the undying spirit of the 21st century woman. It is also an earnest tribute to the founder- fathers of KMV and to all those who subsequently played a pivotal role in steering the college to the place of glory where it stands today. Under the dynamic stewardship of Chander Mohan, an enlightened journalist, and other members of the managing body, the college is surging ahead on the path to excellence.
In the contemporary scenario where outrage against women’s dignity is rampant, the society needs to be sensitised about giving women their rightful place which has been long due. The present book, hopefully, will make a significant contribution towards the attainment of the goal. The book includes 42 articles, from different states of India like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, HP, Haryana, Chandigarh & Punjab and from Hong Kong as well.
The different articles in the book bring into focus the diverse areas of human activity where either empowerment has been attained by women or there is a need for empowering them through changed mindsets & practices. There are critical opinions on the status of women in the fields of media & films, administration, law, corporate & financial sector, literature, psychology, the world of fashion & fabric, science & research, history, culture & tradition etc. Some articles deal with the challenges of work & life balance as also with the role of social reformers, NGOs & various self-help groups in working towards the goal of women empowerment.
KMV as an institution has given to the nation its first generation of educated & empowered women & has ever since been a crusader & champion for the cause of woman empowerment. The crusade must go on till women who constitute one half of humanity get one half of their sky. This book, I am sure, will contribute towards building an intellectual climate and sensitize people towards issues that merit attention. To give women their rightful place in the society, much is still to be done.
