Ludhiana, July 20, 2013: B.C.M Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, Ludhiana conducted a workshop wherein 60 teachers from C.B.S.E. schools participated.
The one-day Teachers’ Self Empowerment Workshop on ‘Strategies for Quality Improvement in Hindi Education at the secondary level’ was held with a view to give teachers a platform to share their own initiatives undertaken for improving Hindi and expose them to a range of approaches, good practices and concrete strategies. Teachers themselves were the resource persons who attended and shared their expertise.
After a round of introductions, the first session opened with Introductory remarks by Shail who stressed upon the urgent need for renewed efforts to bring about visible learning improvement in all subject areas. She spoke of the importance of focusing on Hindi and designing specific integrated plans for improving Hindi learning.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Paramjit Kaur, the school Principal said, ‘Language teaching is really important to us because it enables us to nurture citizens who are active and reflective members of society.’
She emphasised the need to bring a shift in our classrooms from the child’s perspective and link children’s learning to everyday world. The workshop started by involving participants in a participatory discussion on what are some of the feasible changes that can be brought about in Hindi teaching, and what are some of the challenges in this regard. Teachers went on to discuss practical steps to facilitate children to understand social processes in their immediate surroundings, through explorations, discussions, observing their communities’, practices and traditions, visiting local markets, places of historical significance etc.
Peer group leaders were also selected during the workshop who gave demo lessons to the participants.
On the whole this workshop motivated the teachers to help children explore and discuss about their own world. Various strategies were devised upon such as participatory methods of open-ended discussions,
group-work and debates for effective learning.
